The series The Future of the Web is a detailed look at where the open Internet can end up in several years. Throughout the five posts, there’s a common thread of recycled terms that are helpful to deeply understand. I’ve extracted each of the primary terms and concepts into this glossary to help anchor concepts to words.

Core Concepts

TermDefinitionNotes
EntityA real-world thing with interests and identity – a person, business, organization, or concept. Exists independent of the web.The thing being represented, not the representation itself. Automattic is an entity. James is an entity. “Ergonomic chairs” as a concept is an entity.
PresenceAn entity’s digital home. A website, but could also be a social profile or app. An entity can have multiple presences.Automattic.com is Automattic’s presence. J.CV is James’s presence. A presence is owned by an entity.
SurfaceA single addressable location within a presence. A page, an endpoint, a specific URL.The atomic unit of the graph. A blog post is a surface. A product page is a surface.
ContentThe actual information – text, media, structured data, products. Lives within surfaces. What gets consumed, synthesized, presented.

Agents & Actors

TermDefinitionNotes
AgentAn AI system that can take actions, not just respond. Has goals, can traverse, can execute.Generic term for any AI with agency. Includes both user delegates and site delegates.
DelegateAn agent acting on behalf of a principal (person or entity). Has defined interests it serves.A delegate always has a principal. The principal sets guidelines and constraints.
User DelegateA delegate acting on behalf of a person. Receives delegated tasks, pursues goals, returns results.“Book me a flight” → user delegate goes and does it. The user is the principal.
Site DelegateA delegate that represents a presence. Answers queries, presents content, negotiates, defends the entity’s interests. The entity (or presence owner) is the principal. This is what a website would expose.
IntermediaryAn AI layer between user and content that synthesizes but doesn’t act. This is what actually exists in production in early 2026.Perplexity, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT with browsing. User still makes decisions and takes action.

Interactions

TermDefinitionNotes
TraversalMoving through the graph – following links, searching, discovering surfaces across presences. What agents do to find information.
SynthesisCombining content from multiple surfaces into an answer or understanding. What intermediaries do. What user delegates do before acting.
NegotiationBack-and-forth between delegates to reach an outcome.User delegate and site delegate negotiate on price, terms, fit.
ConversionThe goal state – answered question, completed purchase, booked appointment. The atomic unit of value on the web.
AttributionThe record that content was accessed, used for compensation.Logged when an intermediary or agent accesses full content.

The Shifting Models

TermDefinitionNotes
Consumption ModelHow content gets to the user.Legacy: user reads directly. Emerging: AI synthesizes, user receives answer.
Discovery ModelHow surfaces get found.Legacy: search rankings, user clicks. Emerging: agents traverse autonomously.
Economic ModelHow value is captured.Legacy: attention → ads/conversion. Emerging: unclear – synthesis decouples attention from transaction.
Trust ModelHow authority is established.Legacy: links, domain age, brand. Emerging: attestation, delegate reputation, auditability.
Representation ModelHow an entity presents itself.Legacy: static pages designed for humans. Emerging: adaptive presentation via site delegate.
Information ModelHow content is structured and rendered.Legacy: text-first, fixed modality. Emerging: modality-agnostic, rendered on demand.

Economic Infrastructure

TermDefinitionNotes
CollectiveAn organization that mediates between publishers and AI providers. Tracks attribution, distributes compensation.Like ASCAP/BMI for publishing. Doesn’t exist yet – RSL might be a proto-version.
MicropaymentFraction-of-a-cent payment triggered when content is accessed.Protocol-enforced via 402 + signatures. Aggregated and distributed by collective.
Premium MoatContent that AI cannot access – human-first, subscription-gated. AI knows it exists and can upsell.Videos, interviews, investigative journalism behind paywall.

Modality

TermDefinitionNotes
ModalityThe format of content presentation – text, video, voice, 3D, etc.Canonical format is text/blocks. Other modalities generated on demand.
Modality CollapseThe dissolution of fixed format. Same content can be rendered as any modality based on context.User on mobile gets video. Agent-to-agent gets structured text. User driving gets voice.

WordPress Infrastructure

TermDefinitionNotes
Abilities APIA unified registry of what can be done on a WordPress site. Describes actions with structured input/output schemas. The foundation for exposing site capabilities to agents. “Create a post,” “get products,” “process order” – all abilities.
MCP (Model Context Protocol)An open protocol for how AI agents discover and invoke capabilities. Now under the Linux Foundation.Supported by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft. The emerging standard for agent-to-tool communication.
MCP AdapterConnects WordPress Abilities to MCP, exposing site capabilities to external AI services.Uses the adapter pattern – WordPress can switch protocols if MCP is superseded without rewriting abilities.
WP AI ClientA provider-agnostic interface to any LLM from within WordPress.OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, local models – site owner chooses, plugin developer doesn’t care.
Content GuidelinesConfiguration for how a site should be represented by AI agents. Tone, priorities, constraints, permissions. What an agent can do, what it should never do, how it should speak for the entity.
Workflows APIA sister API to Abilities for chaining actions together. Triggers, conditions, sequences. When an order comes in → send email → update inventory → notify team. Automation layer.
